Thai Islands

Phuket vs Krabi vs Koh Samui: Which Destination Is Right for You?

An honest comparison of Thailand's three best-known beach bases by weather, beaches, atmosphere, nightlife, logistics, family travel and cost.

Limestone cliffs and turquoise water at Railay Beach, Krabi

Phuket: the most choice

Thailand's largest island has an international airport, a wide range of hotels and beaches that suit very different moods — busy in some places, quiet in others. Phuket Old Town adds Sino-Portuguese streets and good food.

Krabi: limestone and longtails

Krabi is a mainland province known for dramatic cliffs, Railay's boat-only beaches and island-hopping by longtail. It tends to feel calmer than Phuket and is a natural gateway to Koh Lanta and the Phi Phi islands.

Koh Samui: Gulf-side and gentle

Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand, so its wetter months differ from the Andaman side. It suits couples and families looking for wellness stays, coconut groves and easy beaches, with Koh Phangan and Koh Tao a ferry away.

How to decide

Start with your travel month, then your pace. Want variety and easy flights? Phuket. Scenery and boat days? Krabi. Calm, resort-led days on the Gulf? Samui.
